sasCommunity Tip of the Day

Would you like to know who is using SAS on your Unix, Linux, or Windows servers and what products they are using? Six years ago, frustrated with the lack of an institutionalized methodology, I created my own by hijacking the SAS RTRACE Facility. We have been running it at Westat for about six years now and love the unique insights it provides into SAS usage in our organization.

You can read all about it in my original, groundbreaking SUGI 29 paper Measuring SAS® Software Usage On Shared Servers With the RTRACE Facility as well as in Macro Maven Ron Fehd's innovative follow-up paper Modifying The LogParse PassInfo Macro. Both of these papers provide examples of how some of us have approached this issue.

Submitted by Michael A. Raithel, The man who wrote the book on performance. Contact me at my Discussion Page.

What's New

Congratulations Winners!
Points for Prizes ContestWe'd like to congraluate the SAS Press book winners from the recent "Points for Prizes Contest" who contributed content, edited articles and added SAS tips to the site. One brand new member of the site even achieved "sasCommunity Guru" status in less than one month. Even though the contest is over, you can still earn points by adding content to the site.

Attention All Tipsters

We've just changed the Tip of the Day template to make it easier to use and so that it provides a direct link to your user page (where your points/status is shown). That new template works for tips submitted from this point forward. For previously submitted Tips, there is no way to automatically update them. But you can update your tips and earn 100 points by simply updating your Tip pages. See the Submit a Tip page for details.
