While SAS has an inbuilt PROC IMPORT that allows SPSS files to be imported into SAS, this process is occasionally disrupted by a variety of width size problems.

To resolve these problems, one can use the format all option in a DATA step after the IMPORT step.

data <output file>;
set <input file>; 
format _all_; 
run;
