The first hint about editing is that things will go a lot better if you have JavaScript enabled in your browser (this is the default for most browsers). If so, then there will be a set of icons at the top of the editing window. If you use your mouse to hover over a button, there should be a tip that appears to tell you what that button does. For most of the buttons, you need to use your mouse to select the text that you want to be bolded or used as a link and then click the button and the appropriate syntax will be inserted.

alt-s saves, alt-e edits, alt-t goes to the discussion page for the page your are viewing (t is for "talk). more Keyboard Shortcuts. On a mac, use ctrl instead of alt.

An introduction to the syntax which is commonly utilized is at Help:Syntax Summary.
