Launching a new topic: creating a category and articles
From sasCommunity
This article describes how to easily create a new article on sasCommunity.org and solicit input from other users.
- Find the content. Since there was no material out on the site yet for managers, the content was rounded up from other sources, such as the SUGI and SAS Global Forum proceedings, and other web resources.
- Log in to sasCommunity.org. If you don’t yet have a login, now’s the time to set that up by clicking the “login/create account” link at the top right corner of the page.
- Determine if your article fits under an existing category, or if you need to create a new one. On the left hand menu, under tool box, click “Special Pages”. Then select “Categories” from the page that opens up. Review the list of categories to see if there’s anything that fits your article. In the case of this example, there was no existing category for Management, so a new category was needed.
- (optional) Create a new category. On the left hand menu, under “Page Activity”, click “Create a New Article”. This takes you to the Create a New Article page, which also contains the Create a Category tool. Enter a category name and click the Create Category button.
- Create a new article. On the left hand menu, under “Page Activity”, click “Create a New Article”. This takes you to the Create a New Article page., where you enter a title for your article, in this case “Managing SAS Programmers: Tips and Tricks”. Then you click the “Create Article” button.
- Enter your content using the wiki editor. Link your article to the appropriate Category by inserting the code [[Category:CategoryName]] at the top or bottom of the page. In this case, the code would be [[Category:Management]]. If you need help using the wiki editor, click Help on the left menu, and then click “6. Editing an Article” in the Contents list. You can click Preview at any time to see what your article looks like. When you are done, click Save.
- That’s it, you’re done with the article Managing SAS Programmers: Tips and Tricks.
You can stop there, but why not make your article even better by soliciting input from other users. Send an email out to like-minded users and encourage them to add content to your page. In this case, an email was sent out to a number of the authors of papers featured on the page, asking them to add additional resources and information. This is the power of sasCommunity – bulding on each other’s ideas.
