sasCommunity Forum : sasCommunity - general site feedback : Great site, 1 concern with free speech

The sasCommunity.org site is a welcome addition to the SAS Community. So far, I am very impressed with how it is coming together and see it as a huge shift in the way that SAS information is communicated.

I do have 1 concern and that is what assurances are there that no one will exercise editorial control over the site? Obviously, an offensive post by someone (expletives, inappropriate language, etc.) should be deleted. But what about a critical post? If we look at Wikipedia as an example, many subjects contain 2 sides (or more) of an issue. What if a post is made that is critical of say, SGF? What guarantees will we, the SAS community, have that the site won't be shut down or that the critical post won't be deleted because someone in power doesn't like it?

Wikis operate off a sense of common good. This comes with a price, good and bad. It would be nice to have explicit guarantees that the community will police itself but also that alternative viewpoints are tolerated even if they strike certain people as negative.

The beauty of a Wiki is that it saves everything. Simply deleting what someone else has put there is really rude and any user can revert the site to the way that it was before the change.

We will not delete any posting unless it is obviously off topic (think pornography) or is a copyright infringement where the legitimate copyright holder asks us to remove it.

As you point out, the correct way of handling a disagreement is to edit it in a way which recognizes that there might be two sides to a question and try and present a balanced perspective. It is up to the community to do this, not the Executive Board. This is YOUR site.

My main concern regarding freedom of speech is that the site will fill up with inapropriate content. I used to run a bulletin-board and was continually battling against unwanted content. Let's hope that self policing is adequate control!

Great job everyone!
