I am not totally sure others should have the ability to edit someone elses blog entry. This ability looks like will lead to more problems and headaches than it is worth. If someone else has something to say about a blog or blog entry or if they want to clarify something seems to me that is what the Discussion section to each blog is for.

I think you may be correct. I am not certain whether there is a mod for this in MediaWiki. We will have to see how much of a problem this is before deciding the amount of effort involved in changing this.

As I understand the Wiki philosophy, which I think is very close to Tim Berners-Lee's original intent for the web, editing others' blogs is the central idea for arriving at distilled wisdom in a learned group such as the SAS community. Rather than an explosion of different postings, a single posting can get more and more refined.

Personally I agree with both TobyDunn and Jwhitehurst.

My understanding is that having that an article can be edited by the entire community can and should increase the quality of the article. Thereby improving the overall content of the Wiki.

However, I see a (personal) blog more as an area in which I like to be able to express my point of view of things (of course taking general rules of common sense into consideration). Since it is an expression of my view I would not prefer others - with different views - being able to alter this. I don't mind going into discussion with others, but IMHO this is where the "my talk" page comes in handy.

Therefore I would suggest an option where editing of personal blogs is only limited to the user, moderators/administrators. Where I think that if a moderator/administrator edits a blog (s)he indicates that an edit has been done for ..... (fill in the reason).

Hi,

I am interested in running a blog for my SAS club which would contain messages from club members only which may or may not be viewed by others (I haven't thought about the pros and cons of this).

Although this would increase traffic to the wiki, it would also advertise the site to club members. What are your thoughts?

You are free to do that. However note that the site does not currently (and may never) support private pages (including blogs) among users.
