SAS Global Forum 2007 Opening Session, Orlando Florida 4/16/2007
The Power to Know [TM] ((The lighting and multimedia is fantastic!)) Helped Guy Kawasaki get in the door, second time to visit him today.
Opening skit: Mad scientist and crumpling-paper noises (trying to create.) Creativity, Originality, Innovation: > > > nothing is more daunting than a blank piece of canvas. The wildest of dreams become commonplace. (Airplane, music, etc.) Our lives have been shaped by bright ideas (light bulb, sketch pad, etc.) We began using primitive tools. (Photo of Pyramids) The blank canvas continues to change but the need for innovators continues. YOU are the innovators! And this is the Premiere Event.
Robert C. Fecht, PowerK Consulting Welcome! Good evening. 30 years of history in our annual conference; a new beginning. The people we work with (including clients) need innovation. INNOVATION moves the global economy. Business, R/D, university. Disney built on a foundation of creativity. Same with SAS Institute.
The familiar features of past annual conferences are kept in tact, with emphasis on specific industries. [Keynotes mentioned.] [Sections and social events mentioned.] Thanks to Chairs/volunteers. About 40 people stand for applause. Silver Sponsors; SAS partners. Thanks to SAS Institute for continuing support around the world. And thanks to YOU (Time magazine person of the year.) INNOVATION!
Jim Goodnight, CEO of SAS 32nd user conference, ninth in Florida and sixth in Orlando 3,700 attending. The SAS Project started at NC State, with 30 years of growth. $1.9billion last year. Private and Public sectors. Strive to understand each sector, solving real-world problems. R/D level of investment keeps SAS ahead. 100 new releases. Leverage the power of JMP and SAS visual Business Intelligence [BI]. (Graphs are being shown, including customer satisfaction.)
Global Headquarters are in Cary, NC, with 52 offices worldwide. Master of Science in Analytics. New degree available at NC State. An intensive 10-month degree (See www.SAS.com) Also available, a BI administrator course here at the conference.
Book: The Power of Analytics is used at Harvard, in third printing.
Thank you for coming to the SAS Global Forum.
Mikael Hagstrom VP spoke and welcomed the international users. From USA, 77% and from outside the US. 23%. May 22-23 will be SAS Forum 2007 Stockholm. Steve Forbes will speak.
Annette Harris, SAS Tech Support Feedback plays a key role in INNOVATION. Dialog with all of you is paramount to be responsive. Tomorrow morning is the "Technology Connection" presentation. User Feedback Award: University of CA, San Francisco Dr. Tor Neilands. for work in clinical data. (He is on his honeymoon.)
Jim Davis, VP Marketing INNOVATION is a priority for all of us. Doing things the same way may be missing giving us the edge. Finding useful information needs a foundation of discovery. [Graphic of enabling platforms, including the Intelligence Platform.] Call it the Information Value Chain, including BI. Example: Retail.
Retail development partner: Kohl's VP (expects great things.) $15billion w/profit of $1billion. Make business data driven. "Retail is detail" brings success. Meet customer demand. A separate team handles the analysis; larger than buying team. They use automation and information. Predicts with SAS: allocations and public demand analysis. INNOVATION. Every area of the company follows: launching new items. This October will open 100 new stores in one day. Keep passion.
Guy Kawasaki, keynote speaker The Art of Innovation. INNOVATION in seven minutes. Macintosh. Special rules under Steve Jobs. Back rubs on Thurs/Fri. OJ. Not that this causes INNOVATION. Apple II was making all the money, and Macintosh was spending all the money. How many Macintosh division people does it take to screw in a light bulb. One! holds it up and the universe revolves around. How many here use Macintosh? The usual 5%. How many MS people? None! Darkness is the new standard.
One good example. Understand what it means. Understand evolutional.
Ice harvesting industry in the United States. Cut blocks of ice, with innovation 200 tons from NE to India. 100 tons made it. Still made a lot $$$.
Next was the Ice Factory industry, freezing water and delivering. Back then, PC was personal chillers.
Next curve was the refrigerator curve. In your house. Lesson: none of the ice harvesters; factories; became refrigerator. They only understood sharper saws and bigger wagons.
Now, none of the refrigerator co, look at the biotech curve. Very few companies can move from one curve to the next.
It is not about doing things 10% better but ten times better. SAS is an example of a company moving to the new curve.
One more example from the computer example: typewriter company, daisy wheel company. four more type sizes of Helvetica isn't innovation. Adding more fonts was the same curve. Move to the laser printer. Creating the new technology was INNOVATION.
Dr. James Goodnight presented awards to two companies, Enterprise Award for Business Intelligence: JP MorganChase $50billion Steve Gladyzs, VP Consumer Risk. Upgrades in methodologies/etc were aided by SAS. EDI. Future uses will include portals, exec.dash.board, INNOVATION.
Whirlpool, leading manufacturer of kitchen appliances, 170 countries. 75,000 employees (bought Maytag) QUALITY They use warranty analysis. Six-sigma and JMP. Predict & react. We are competing against time. Steam will be injected into the dryer to eliminate the iron <<applause>> INNOVATION.
www.SAScommunity.org Rob Fecht, Don Henderson, Phil Miller. Three SAS executive board members introduced a new website. Bob Fecht: In the age of blogs, the time is right: a true SAS community! Open 24/7, assessable to anyone interested in SAS. J. Philip Miller Washington University talked about some view/pages. Don Henderson interacted on SASopedia Example: Numeric representations in SAS. My watch-list will keep you informed when updates occur. Our best SAS programmers/advisors can make sure it is updated well. "We can make mailing lists obsolete", the user gains control. Blogger Corner included, with a list linking to SAS blog sites. Help pages assist users in understanding the article model. Feedback on the site is encouraged. Started in Nov, 2006, and included participation of the SAS Executive Board.
This is your community. Make sure it meets your needs.
Check it out at www.SAScommunity.org
This is also a means for you to let the Executive Board service your needs. Dr. James Goodnight lends his support, encouragement, and excitement: "We built SAS on the simple principle of listening to users; . . . we are very excited to be a part of it. [SAScommunity.org]"
The session concluded with innovative entertainment.
