Computer Program Size Table Top Rule

"If your program is more than than ten pages long, it is too big: some pages will fall off the edge of the table."

This rule-of-thumb was relayed to me by my Comp.Sci advisor W.W. Peterson in the mid-1980s.

Lay out the pages of the program in this matrix:

1 2 3 4
5 6 7 8
9 x 10

Position X is the page under review.

The Math

page size = 8-1/2 * 11
4 wide = 4 * 8.5 = 34 inches ~= 3 feet width

3 depth = 3 * 11 = 33 inches ~= 3 feet height

table-top dimensions: ~3 feet * ~3 feet
