Talk:Basics of using sasCommunity.org

From sasCommunity

Jump to: navigation, search

This really needs to be transformed in format at moved to sasCommunity.org at the earliest possible time!

1) to access it you have to provide to SAS Institute your name, company and email address

2) it is presented only as a WMA media feed which requires an Active X control. In general, many users outside of captive MicroSoft shops block using Active X controls.

3) the instructions for how to make it work are woefully out of date (SAS Institute needs a Wiki for their website).

4) It does not work with the most updated Firefox nor IE 7 browsers (at least on the first machine I have tried).

I had not noticed - probably because I had previously used the computer I was on to view a recorded video and I suspect it did not prompt me because of cookies. Regardless, not sure what we can do about it in the short term. --Donh 20:21, 29 March 2007 (EDT)

here is what the popup (which of course I normally block) says:

To view this recording, you must change your configuration.

You can use:

   * Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4 through 7.99 and Windows Media Player 6.4 or later on Windows, or

   * Netscape version 7 through 7 and Windows Media Player 6.4 or later and Windows Media Player plug-in for Netscape on Windows, or

   * Netscape Communicator version 4.06 through 4.99 and Windows Media Player 6.4 or later and Windows Media Player plug-in for Netscape on Windows, or
   * Netscape Communicator version 4.06 through 4.99 and Windows Media Player 6.3 or later and Windows Media Player plug-in for Netscape on Solaris.

(Don't forget to run the installer program after downloading it.)

"Recommended: Internet Explorer 5 or later and Windows Media Player 7 or later on Windows 98, Me, 2000, or XP.

Now this is with Firefox 2.0.0.3 (which is the most recent, patched version) and Windows Media Player 11.

This is a critical issue about the difference between sasCommunity and sas.com. sasCommunity is to be built using LAMP and open to all, not just those who sit in a Fortune 50 controlled environment.

I have now tested Firefox and IE 7 on another system and also Opera and none of them work for me to be able to see the video. It would be quite acceptible to simply have the file available to download and view locally instead of streaming it.

I don't think I can do anything about this - at least before the conference. I saw no way to save the recording as file - that was my first preference.
