[edit] What tips do you offer to becoming a consultant?
As my friends know, I retired from the City of Dallas in January, and I really like the idea of doing consulting work.
1. What are the technical details to starting a consulting business, like taxes, organization, etc?
2. What 2-3 things would you recommend a person considering consulting do first?
Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Congratulations Clarence!
Charlie Shipp and I presented a paper which we think will answer a few of your consulting questions and then some. Our paper, "Consulting: Critical Success Factors" can be accessed using this link.
I look forward to seeing you in the near future!
Best of luck!
Kirk
Clarence, There are some excellent books on starting in consulting by Herman Holtz. Visit Barnes & Noble or your favorite bookstore and browse for an hour or two to pick out a good book on setting up. As you begin consulting you, consider teaming with a senior SAS consultant. There are other papers for you (past and future) on SAS consulting. Keep tuned here and also to SAS-L. Contact the user group participants in Dallas and Texas, they are great.
hth, Charlie Shipp
[edit] As a Consultant, How do you Check SAS-L ??
--CharlieShipp 9:37, 29 April 2007 (EDT)
The world thanks Joe Kelley and other pioneers for the interchange called SAS-L. It is the 'List-SERVer' at the University of Georgia (there are other servers added to help the load). You add your ID-name and eMail address, and then you receive an 'echo' back of all Questions, Answers, and Discussion, (with the top SAS programmers/consultants.)
SAS-L is good to read, and if you have a coding question, you can put a question up at the end of your working day (7pm?) and have an answer from New Zealand (or vice versa) in the morning. What a great concept! You can learn a lot!!
You can turn MAIL on or off (toggle). With MAILon, you receive 30 to 50 messages a day. When you go on vacation or don't want to be reading the SAS-L mail, turn MAILoff.
You can learn more about SAS-L in the SASopedia (on the left of this screen, under MAIN MENU).
Thanks, and congratulations to those entering the SAS-L Hall of Fame, and the other awards this year, like Rookie-of-the-Year!
For some of us, a better way is to look at the weekly summaries every week or so.
You can do this by setting a bookmark for:
http://listserv.uga.edu/archives/sas-l.html
Then when you have time and interest you can read the threads of subjects.
You can also search the SAS-L archives by subject. See Sasopedia for details.
[edit] Ease with communicating // Adding comment // Participation needed!

Thanks, Kirk, for making the way to communicate easier.
As we learn about Wikipedia details, more will participate;
also as top consultants get back from Orlando & fun in sun.

Every best wish and success to the community of SAS consultants, those aspiring to become consultants, as well as former consultants as you explore, exchange ideas, and partake in engaging discussions on Consultant's Corner!

[edit] SAS Global Forum 2007 Papers (online)
Michael Raithel notes this on SAS-L@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU
Subject: SAS Global Forum 2007 Papers Are Now Available Online!
Dear SAS-L-ers,
It has been brought to my attention that the SAS Global Forum 2007 papers are now available online:
http://www2.sas.com/proceedings/forum2007/TOC.html
Great! There are no movies that I want to see this weekend, so I'll curl up with some good papers and a lot of cups of tea.
Best of reading to all of you!
I hope that this suggestion proves helpful now, and in the future!
[edit] Taking a short VACATION from SAS-L Discussion Group??
Here is the command when you want to remain a member of the Discussion Group, but are taking a well-deserved vacation to somewhere:
Set SAS-L mail nomail
When you return you can send this command to LISTSERV@LISTSERV.UGA.EDU ::
Set SAS-L mail mail
Further, you can enter commands such as 'HELP' or 'HELP HELP' to learn.
HTH.
PS: You can follow links on SAS Community main menu 'SASopedia' for 'SAS-L' for possible delivery options (such as digest, web-view, etc.) and how to make your preference changes with check boxes.
