If you want to replace missing values of character variables with a string such as "***NOT ANSWERED***", you can use the COALESCEC function:

charvar = coalescec(charvar, "***NOT ANSWERED***");

Remember that the length of the substitution string cannot be greater than the length of the character variable. If it is, the string is truncated.
