Tip of the Day Talk:October 8
"When should this technique be used to sort the data?"
This question was asked after this tip first appeared, and given the caveats presented with this tip, this seems to be a reasonable question. The short answer is probably never - if the only task is to sort the data. Although the reordering of the observations is substantially different in the HASH object, the basic issues surrounding a sort are the same. If on the otherhand the hash object is to be used for other tasks (data summarizations, subsetting, table look-ups) as well, then it would probably not make sense to use a PROC SORT before loading the hash table. --Art Carpenter 09:25, 9 October 2009 (UTC)
